DATES (KHOLAS)

Dates (Kholas) is a luxurious, sun-drenched gourmand note in perfumery, inspired by the richly flavored Kholas dates of the Middle East—prized for their caramel-like sweetness, buttery texture, and slightly nutty depth. Unlike generic date accords, Kholas dates bring a more refined, golden character, with nuances of toffee, dried apricot, honeyed fig, and soft brown sugar. The olfactory impression is warm, indulgent, and slightly resinous, making it ideal for ambery, oriental, and gourmand compositions. Typically used as a heart or base note, it adds opulence, softness, and a subtly spiced, desert-born richness.

History & Production: Cultivated mainly in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region, Kholas dates are considered one of the most aromatic and flavorful varieties, often used in traditional desserts or paired with Arabic coffee. In perfumery, the Kholas date accord is a stylized interpretation, crafted using fruity lactones, amber molecules, sweet balsams (like labdanum or benzoin), and touches of dried fruit notes to capture the essence of the dried, slightly sticky fruit. Paired with ingredients like oud, saffron, rose, or sandalwood, the Kholas date brings a regal sweetness and cultural depth, evoking Arabian majlis, golden hospitality, and the timeless indulgence of desert luxury.
