CITRAL

Citral is a powerful and naturally occurring fragrance molecule celebrated for its intensely fresh, lemony aroma with a slightly sweet and zesty character. Found primarily in lemongrass, verbena, and citrus peel oils (especially lemon and orange), Citral imparts a sharp, vibrant citrus top note that feels clean, uplifting, and instantly recognizable. Its scent is more concentrated and linear than whole citrus oils, delivering a crisp, aldehydic freshness with mild green and herbal undertones. Used extensively as a top note, Citral is essential for adding brightness and sparkle to citrus accords, colognes, and aromatic compositions.

History & Production: Citral is a key component in natural essential oils and can also be produced synthetically for greater purity and stability. It exists as two geometric isomers—geranial and neral—which together form what we recognize as Citral, lending both a bright zestiness and a softer lemon-blossom nuance. In perfumery, it plays a dual role: as a vibrant olfactory ingredient and as a building block for synthesizing other aroma molecules such as ionones and citronellol. While incredibly versatile, Citral is used with care due to its sensitizing potential. When expertly blended, it creates a luminous citrus signature that is fresh, energetic, and timeless.
