CEDAR/CEDARWOOD (TEXAS)
Cedarwood (Texas) is a dry, smoky-woody note in perfumery, derived from the heartwood of Juniperus ashei—commonly known as Texas cedar or mountain cedar. Compared to the sweeter, pencil-shavings scent of Virginian cedarwood or the creamy richness of Atlas cedar, Texas cedarwood is bolder and more rugged, offering a dry, smoky, slightly tar-like aroma with subtle peppery and leathery undertones. It adds structure, depth, and a grounded, masculine elegance to woody, leathery, and oriental compositions, most often as a base note.
History & Production: Native to the southwestern United States, Texas cedarwood oil is obtained via steam distillation of the tree’s heartwood. Rich in cedrene and thujopsene, the oil is highly fixative and long-lasting, anchoring fragrances with a distinctively arid, woody backbone. In perfumery, it is often used to create contrast—balancing sweeter or floral notes with dry, smoky precision. It pairs beautifully with incense, patchouli, amber, leather, and musks, and is especially popular in masculine or unisex scents that aim to evoke the spirit of the American Southwest—sun-baked earth, rugged terrain, and open skies.
