CEDAR/CEDARWOOD (MOROCCO)

Cedarwood (Morocco) is a warm, dry, and resinous woody note in perfumery, distilled from the Atlas cedar (Cedrus atlantica), a majestic conifer native to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Rich and slightly balsamic, Moroccan cedarwood has a smooth, grounding aroma with facets of dry wood, soft spice, and a subtle leathery warmth. It is gentler and more refined than the pencil-shaving sharpness of Virginian cedar and lacks the smoky tar-like intensity of Texas cedar, making it ideal for adding elegance, structure, and serenity to woody, ambery, and chypre compositions. Used predominantly as a base note, it offers excellent fixative qualities and a long-lasting, velvety trail.

History & Production: Atlas cedar has been prized for centuries in both spiritual and artistic traditions, and its essential oil is extracted via steam distillation of the heartwood. The resulting oil is rich in sesquiterpenes like alpha-cedrene and beta-himachalene, which give it its woody-spicy character and natural preservative qualities. In perfumery, Cedarwood (Morocco) blends beautifully with rose, incense, patchouli, labdanum, and citrus, adding depth and refinement. It evokes the scent of ancient temples, carved wood, and cool desert air—calm, grounding, and quietly majestic.
