VETIVER
Vetiver smells woody and earthy, with a root-like dryness that can carry smoke, nuts or a faint powdery softness. Although it belongs to the woody fragrance family, the natural oil comes from the roots of a grass, Chrysopogon zizanioides, rather than from timber. Its character can feel textured and substantial without being sweet.
The roots are distilled with water or steam to obtain the essential oil. Different origins and processed forms offer different balances: some highlight a brighter grapefruit-like edge, while others lean towards smoke and leather. In a perfume, vetiver can give citrus a dry counterpoint or reinforce a woody, leathery impression. It does not make every composition dark or force it into a particular gender or season. The surrounding materials and proportions determine how much earthiness, freshness or smoke you notice, and the note list alone does not disclose the formula.
