TOBACCO
Tobacco in perfume often centres on the warm smell of dried leaves, with woody, hay-like or softly sweet facets. Some materials also suggest moss, fruit or a darker animalic undertone. It need not smell like a lit cigarette: a dry leafy impression and a smoky effect are different choices within a composition.
Natural tobacco absolutes are made from leaves of Nicotiana tabacum. Biolandes, for example, documents a dried-leaf extract, while Eden Botanicals describes its Bulgarian absolute as woody and sweetly hay-like. Perfumers can also suggest tobacco through other aromatic materials; Givaudan’s Kephalis has a tobacco facet within a woody amber profile. The note therefore does not prove that leaf extract is present. Vanilla, cocoa or fruit can draw it towards gourmand warmth, as in Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille, while drier settings can emphasise its herbal, woody side.
