NEW CALEDONIAN SANDALWOOD

New Caledonian sandalwood brings to mind smooth, warm wood with a pronounced sweetness. Its rounded character can feel creamy, while some oils reveal a delicate floral nuance that lightens the woody impression. In a perfume, this combination can support soft flowers or offer a mellow counterpoint to sharper wood and spice. The effect may be full or restrained according to the composition.

The natural oil is associated with Santalum austrocaledonicum, a different species from the Santalum album used for many Indian sandalwood oils. Suppliers offer New Caledonian material steam-distilled from wood. Species and origin help identify the material, but do not promise a fixed scent or certify the ingredients of every perfume listing the note. Look for the balance between sweet warmth, smooth wood and any floral softness.
