SALTY NOTES

Salty notes are a broad sensory description rather than one recognisable ingredient. They may suggest the briny freshness of a coast, a mineral edge beneath warm amber, or a savoury counterpoint to buttery caramel. What connects these effects is the impression of saltiness; the surrounding fragrance can still be fresh, woody, floral or sweet.

This makes the other notes especially useful when choosing a perfume. Sea-like and green elements may lead towards an open coastal picture, while creamy or toasted elements can turn the same salty idea towards a dessert. A saline description does not mean the perfume contains salt, and it does not identify one universal molecule. Consider how prominent the salty effect is and whether you enjoy its contrast with the composition’s softer, warmer or sweeter parts.
