PRECIOUS WOODS

Precious woods is a broad fragrance description for a woody theme, not the name of one tree or a standardized blend. It may suggest smooth, enveloping wood, a drier grain or a darker, smoky impression. The useful clue is the woody character; the word precious does not identify a botanical species, disclose an ingredient’s rarity or establish how it was sourced.

Perfume houses use the phrase for different combinations. Dior groups cedar, sandalwood and oud among precious woods, while its Oud Rosewood presentation specifically brings together oud, sandalwood and guaiac. These are examples, not a required recipe for every note carrying the name. Read the rest of a fragrance’s description to distinguish creamy softness from dry wood or smoky depth. A listed precious-woods accord can provide a woody setting for other notes, but its strength, duration and exact materials cannot be determined from the label alone.
