PETITGRAIN
Petitgrain captures the leafy side of bitter orange: green, lightly bitter and fresh, with a citrus brightness and an orange-flower nuance. The result can link the impression of an orange grove’s foliage with its blossoms, without becoming simply sweet orange juice. In perfume, this balance can give citrus a greener outline or bring a brisk, leafy contrast to flowers.
Petitgrain bigarade oil is distilled from the leaves and small twigs of Citrus aurantium. It differs from neroli, the essential oil of the blossoms, and from bitter-orange peel oil. Olfactive Studio documents foliage distillation in Paraguay, while IFF describes a Tunisian oil with bitter green orange-flower and citrus facets. Those are examples of the material’s production and character; origin and processing can change the balance. The note name alone does not specify which oil a fragrance contains.
