PEONY
Peony in perfume suggests soft, unfolding petals with a rose-like floral character and a fresh green edge. It can have a gentle sweetness rather than the richness of a dense rose impression. Jo Malone London describes its peony interpretation with rose, honey and green accents, setting the flower beside crisp apple and soft suede. Those companions show how a petal-like note can feel both fresh and rounded.
The fragrance of real peonies varies considerably by variety, as the American Peony Society documents. A peony note therefore should not be read as the exact smell of every garden bloom. In a perfume, it names an olfactory interpretation rather than specifying a particular flower extract. Look for the surrounding notes: fruit can emphasise its juicy freshness, while rose and other flowers can build a fuller bouquet.
