MUSCONE (MUSK)
Muscone is a musk molecule with a soft, slightly sweet smell and a warm animalic character. Powdery nuances can give it a gently cosmetic feel, while the animalic side suggests bodily warmth rather than a purely soapy freshness. It can lend a rounded musky presence to a composition, including woody and leathery settings.
Muscone is not simply another name for the entire musk family. Its naturally occurring form is an important odour component of deer musk, and the molecule is also produced through chemical synthesis for fragrance use. This distinction matters: the name does not imply animal-derived material in a perfume. It is also different from muscenone, a related but separate musk material with its own character.
