MATÉ
Maté brings a herbal leaf character to perfume, with green tea-like freshness and a warmer, drier side that can recall hay or tobacco. Some extracts also show soft floral, powdery or smoky nuances. This combination can make a tea impression feel fuller and less purely fresh, without necessarily making the whole fragrance smoky.
The botanical source is Ilex paraguariensis, also known as yerba maté. Natural perfumery materials include a leaf absolute: IFF documents solvent extraction followed by purification with ethyl alcohol for its grade. An absolute is not the same preparation as a steam-distilled essential oil. Suppliers offer different extracts and dilutions, so the exact balance of green leaves, dried hay and smoke depends on the material and the composition. A note listing alone does not identify the extract used.
