LEMON
Lemon gives perfume a clear citrus brightness, recalling freshly cut lemon peel and the juicy character of the fruit. Its tart-smelling edge can be softened by a little sweetness, so a lemon note need not feel harsh or like an entirely sour juice. In a composition, it can sharpen the outline of flowers, lighten a woody theme or add a crisp accent to aromatic herbs.
A familiar natural source is lemon essential oil from Citrus limon. Cold pressing the fruit peel releases its aromatic oil; this is different from using lemon juice or extracting the tree’s flowers. Perfumers choose materials and build blends to shape the final lemon impression. The surrounding notes can make it seem drier, greener or sweeter, and a listed lemon note does not identify one particular oil or guarantee the same expression in every fragrance.
