LARCH

Larch suggests conifer freshness with a resinous, woody body and a lightly spicy edge. The contrast is between aromatic needles and a warmer balsamic impression, where balsamic means soft resinous warmth. It can give a woodland theme more substance than a simple fresh-air accord, without requiring a smoky or heavily sweet result.

The name covers trees in the genus Larix. European larch, Larix decidua, is one source of essential oil, obtained by steam-distilling needles and small branches. Producers describe this oil as resinous and woody, with some noting a spicy undertone. That example should not be treated as the only larch species or one universal oil profile. In perfume, an oil or constructed accord may express the note; the surrounding ingredients determine how much freshness, wood or resin is perceived.
