IRIS
Iris in perfume often combines a powdery floral impression with violet-like softness and a woody, rooty side. Depending on the material and composition, it can also suggest earth, soap or a subtle leather texture. Powdery describes a soft, dry impression rather than loose powder in the bottle. Iris can therefore feel floral without resembling a straightforward bouquet of freshly cut flowers.
The natural perfumery materials known as orris come from iris rhizomes, the thick underground stems, including those of Iris pallida and Iris germanica. Distillation produces orris butter; other refined extracts offer different balances of facets. Traditional maturation develops the aroma, although producers also use faster processing methods. An iris note does not identify a particular extract or guarantee natural orris content, and its prominence depends on the whole fragrance.
