FERN

Fern in perfume evokes a green woodland scene: leafy freshness, aromatic herbs and a mossy, shaded background. It is useful to think of a composed impression rather than a single, precisely defined plant smell. Some interpretations lean towards damp greenery; others balance aromatic freshness with the softer warmth of hay.

The note is closely associated with fougère, the fragrance family whose French name means fern. In this style, lavender and other herbs can meet darker mossy tones and coumarin’s hay-like sweetness. Houbigant’s interpretation illustrates that interplay with lavender, moss notes and warm tonka facets. A fern note need not reproduce that particular composition, and the name alone establishes neither a botanical species nor the presence of a fern extract.
