BLACKCURRANT BUD (BOURGEONS DE CASSIS)
Blackcurrant bud has a vivid green character threaded with juicy fruit. Its sharper, sulfurous facet gives the berry impression an assertive edge, so it can feel more like the living plant than a sweet fruit confection. In a fragrance, this contrast can bring crispness around flowers or add a less sugary dimension to a fruity theme. How prominent that edge becomes depends on the material and the composition.
The French expression bourgeons de cassis means blackcurrant buds. These are buds of Ribes nigrum, not its ripe berries or open flowers. A documented perfumery material is the absolute, obtained by solvent extraction followed by purification with alcohol. Other processed forms also exist, so the note name should not be read as a guarantee of one extraction method or a fixed scent intensity.
