BITTER ORANGE (BIGARADE)
Bitter orange, also called bigarade, gives perfume a citrus-peel character that can combine freshness with softer fruity and floral facets. The word bitter does not mean the entire scent is harsh or unsweet. Its interest lies in the balance between lively peel and the rounder aspects of the fruit.
Citrus aurantium is the botanical reference for bitter orange, and peel oil can be obtained by cold pressing. The fruit note should be distinguished from neroli, associated with the flowers, and petitgrain, associated with leafy material. A perfume's note list does not identify one exact oil grade. Explore the composition's other citrus, herbs or woods to understand how its bigarade freshness is presented.
